When processing a return, you choose how to refund the customer: cash, card (reverse charge), store credit, or a combination.
Refund the customer in cash. The amount is deducted from the till. This is appropriate when the original payment was cash or when you choose to give cash instead of recharging the card. The till variance will reflect the cash going out.
For card refunds, the system processes a reverse charge through Stripe Terminal. The original card is credited. Ensure the customer has the same card available if required by your Stripe setup. Card refunds are tracked in payment records.
Refund to store credit adds the refund amount to the customer's store credit balance. Useful when the customer prefers credit for a future purchase or when you don't have cash/card details. The balance is updated immediately and synced with Shopify if integration is active.
You can split a refund across multiple methods. For example: $20 cash + $30 to store credit. Add each refund method and amount until the total refund is fully allocated. This matches the flexibility of split payments at checkout.
